What is WIC?

WIC is a special health and nutrition care program for women, infants and children with nutritional and dietary problems. WIC Program services are available in almost all Montana counties and on all Montana Indian Reservations. WIC provides nutrition education, referral services and specific nutritious foods for those participating. WIC is operated through county and tribal health departments and hospitals. The program's aim is to provide nutrition information and the right kind of foods needed during pregnancy and early childhood to prevent diseases, encourage normal growth and development, and help ensure that healthy babies are born to mothers participating in WIC. Breastfeeding is promoted in WIC as the best choice of feeding for the benefits to the mother as well as the baby. The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services administers the statewide WIC Program.

Services Provided: Vouchers are provided to purchase nutritious foods at local grocery stores. Nutrition services are also provided which include nutrition education/information on healthy eating, and referrals for health care.

Policy: It is the policy of the Montana WIC Program that potentially income eligible persons in Montana meeting all other eligibility requirements be enrolled in the WIC Program.

The terms "economic unit" and "family" can be used interchangeably. We perceive a family to be a household or an economic unit composed of a person or group of persons who usually (although not necessarily) live together and whose production of income and consumption of goods or services are shared.

Background: WIC Income Guidelines are implemented concurrently with Medicaid Income Guidelines. This facilitates adjunctive eligibility determinations and referrals.

Eligibility: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, infants and children up to five who are below annual income guidelines.
